These scones are quick to make and very moist! Someone gave me the inspiration for this years ago.

Ingredients

    Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. 2
    Cut butter into little pieces in large bowl.
  3. 3
    With pastry blender, mix flour, sugar, and baking powder into butter.
  4. 4
    Using fork, quickly and gently stir in milk and yogurt just until dough clings together.
  5. 5
    Turn dough onto a floured surface (dough will be STICKY!).
  6. 6
    Gently knead in currants, taking care not to overwork dough.
  7. 7
    Halve dough and pat each half into a 6-inch circle.
  8. 8
    Cut each circle into 8 wedges.
  9. 9
    Place wegdes on a floured baking sheet, making sure they do not touch.

    In a small bowl, beat together the egg yolk and water.
  11. 11
    Brush mixture over wedges.
  12. 12
    Bake in 400 F oven for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden.

    What happened! I must be the only review that gives a negative response to these scones. I was so dissappointed. Thought it was a "given". They were crusty, tough and hardly no taste. Followed directions to a tee. My Irish Mother just tasted one and God Bless her, she said they were ok. This coming from a lady who made the best scones ever. Maybe I should get the recipe from her head---abit o' this, abit o'that and attempt to make them as they should be. Disappointed.

    You have no idea how thrilled I was to find this recipe... I'd given up on making soda bread for an Irish dinner last week. (Nearly impossible in an electric oven.) These scones are so similar in texture to soda bread; nice little crunch on the outside, soft and moist on the inside. Turned out great in the electric oven! I couldn't find currants, so I used Craisins and chopped-up apricots. The scones are superb with a little orange marmalade & a big glass of milk. Thanks SO much for posting this, tappies!

    These are delicious. I took them to my monthly women's missionary meetings and they were devoured! I got tons of compliments....couldn't even take any pictures...they're gone!!!
