Try the recipe that has sold millions of waffles. If you prefer pecan waffles, add 1/4 cup chopped pecans before pouring the batter onto the waffle iron

SERVES 6 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Combine flour, salt and baking soda in a medium bowl and stir to combine.
  2. 2
Lightly beat the egg in another medium bowl and combine with sugar, butter, and shortening, mixing well until smooth.
  3. 3
Add the half & half, milk, buttermilk and vanilla and mix well.
  4. 4
Add the dry flour mixture to the wet mixture while beating and mix until smooth.
  5. 5
If you can, cover and chill overnight, though the batter can be used right away.
  6. 6
Rub a light coating of vegetable oil on a waffle iron, and preheat it.
  7. 7
Leave the batter out of the refrigerator to warm up a bit as your waffle iron is preheating.
  8. 8
Spoon 1/3 to 1/2 cup of batter into the waffle iron and cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until the waffles are light brown.

These were so good! Other recipes i have tried taste very plain, and baking powder-y. I had to sub plain milk for buttermilk as i didn't have buttermilk, lemon, or vinager, xD and i subed butter for shortnening, and butter and milk combined for half and half. I also sprinkled the tops with brown sugar before closeing the waffle iron. So GOOD! I will be using this recipe every time from now on.

Most waffles that I have made in the past are egg separators, folding in the whites. These waffles are good but I find this method time consuming. Just moving to the south, I have had the opportunity to try waffle house waffles. A small little restaurant that you can find at almost every exit sometimes on both sides. And yes these do taste like waffle house waffles. I have yet to try keeping it in the fridge to make the next day but I like the idea. The amount and type of ingredients would make the average person short for this recipe. I too do not usually keep buttermilk or ½ and ½ in the fridge. I do however keep cream in the fridge and vinegar in the cupboard. For ½ and ½ I use ½ milk and ½ cream and for buttermilk I add 1 teaspoon of vinegar to ¼ cup of milk, you can also use lemon. The first waffle right off the grill was good and very sweet. Decreasing the sugar to much might change the crispness of the waffle so we will eat them without syrup, and with pecan OMGosh. After trying a darker setting, the waffles came out crisp… while eating all I could think about is how good this would be topped with strawberry or any berry with a dollop of whipped cream. Thank you so much for this recipe. We all liked them very much and will make this part of our Saturday morning tradition.

This is the BEST waffle recipe I've ever had. I used nonfat half & half, low fat buttermilk, nonfat milk & Splenda & it turned out fabulous. Great texture, great flavor. Thank you so much; I've been looking for a homemade waffle recipe & now I can show this one off!

This recipe was great, but it wasn't quite Waffle House. I found it to be missing something...so at the end, when I had just a little bit of the batter left, I did a little experiment. A while back, my father-in-law told me that the secret to Waffle House's waffles was malt....so, i threw some malt in at the end. For the last two waffles, I added about a 1/4 cup of malt. (for those who don't know, it's a powder. the brand i got was Carnation and sometimes you put it on ice cream) That tasted alot more like Waffle House waffles. Thanks for posting a great recipe!
