Amish Stewed Crackers

Recipe #47677 | 15 min | 5 min prep | add private note

By: WJKing
Nov 24, 2002

Another simple recipe I am almost embarrassed to post. My Amish mother-in-law passed this on, as my husband was raised with this one. It's STILL a favorite of his today! He prefers his eggs over top the crackers - you can eat it as you wish! This was also a treat served when someone was feeling ill - fairly easy on the stomach.

SERVES 4 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 (4 ounce) package Ritz crackers (1-2 sleeves depending how thick you want it, we use about 1 1/2)

Directions

  1. 1
Brown butter in a pan, then add milk.
  2. 2
When hot, pour over crackers & let milk soak inches.
  3. 3
    Serve with eggs for breakfast.

PA DUTCH RECEIPE This receipe was used when you had a stommy ache. But instead of rites crackers you used saltine crackers and added sugar and cinnamon, no butter.

Growing up in Lancaster County Pa. my mom made stewed crackers at my dad's request. We usually had them at suppertime instead of potaoes.. and instead of Ritz or saltines she always used English water crackers. Yummy!!!
