Posted in response to my own request. This is said to be the best and only banana pudding you should make! courtesy Nabisco.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
MIX 1/2 cup of the sugar, flour and salt in top of double boiler.
  2. 2
Blend in 3 egg yolks and milk.
  3. 3
Cook, uncovered, over boiling water 10 to 12 minutes or until thickened, stirring constantly.
  4. 4
Remove from heat; stir in vanilla.
  5. 5
RESERVE 10 of the wafers for garnish.
  6. 6
Spread small amount of custard on bottom of 1-1/2-quart baking dish; cover with layers of 1/3 each of the remaining wafers and sliced bananas.
  7. 7
Pour about 1/3 of the remaining custard over bananas.
  8. 8
Continue to layer wafers, bananas and custard to make a total of 3 layers of each, ending with custard.
  9. 9
BEAT egg whites on high speed of electric mixer until soft peaks form.
  10. 10
Gradually add remaining 1/4 cup sugar, beating until stiff but not dry.
  11. 11
Spoon over custard; spread evenly to cover entire surface of custard and sealing well to edge.
  12. 12
BAKE at 350°F for 15 to 20 minutes or until lightly browned.
  13. 13
Cool slightly or refrigerate several hours until chilled.
  14. 14
Top with reserved wafers just before serving.
  15. 15
Garnish with additional banana slices, if desired.

Perfect! This was my first attempt at making real pudding, and I couldn't have been happier. It was not difficult at all! Also, It seemed like a lot of bananas at the beginning, but don't be shy, the end result is perfect! This is the only recipe I'll use when I want real, traditional banana pudding!

Made today to take to a picnic we had after church. It was really tasty but it was a little runny. Never did set up and I really don't know why. I do think the original old fashion nana pudding is the best so I will try again.

Came here to get the recipe, 'cause I had a box of off-brand vanilla wafers. I absolutely love this stuff! I hadn't had it in a really long time, so I made it for my DH and stepdaughters. I don't think my stepdaughters liked it so much, if you can believe it (thanks to their mom, they don't know what real cooking is!) But it was just as good as I remembered it being, and pretty easy to do. I did make one boo-boo though...forgot to separate my eggs, and ended up using whole eggs in my custard...didn't hurt the recipe though!
