I love all breads I've had from India and this is one of them. This is a basic recipe for the fried Indian bread, Pooris. Another recipe I got from the Micheff Sisters. Hope you enjoy it!

SERVES 6 , 6 Pooris (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Put the flour and salt into a medium-sized bowl. Pour the oil and hot water on top. Mix together with hands until it becomes a soft dough. Cover the dough with a damp towel to keep it moist. Let the dough sit for 30 minutes.
  2. 2
Sprinkle some flour on the counter and knead the dough for a couple of minutes. Divide the dough into 6 equal parts. Roll each piece into a 6-inch circle. Be sure to cover each circle with a cloth to keep from drying out.
  3. 3
Heat a couple of tablespoons of canola oil in a skillet. When the skillet is hot, fry one circle of dough at a time, adding a little oil with each. Fry 15-20 seconds on each side until the it is puffed and golden. Serve hot.

This is very good and very easy, quite tasty. I made an entire Indian dinner tonight, and this went along perfectly. For my DS, who rejected the rest of the dinner (he is 3) this was all he ate. Oh well, his loss. But we all loved them. Thanks Enjolinfam. Made for PAC Fall 2008.

Very easy and very good! I made these with white flour and used cooking spray instead of oil. Wonderful! Thanks for sharing.

I would give you 10 stars if I could. This is fantastic and easy. For frying I used oil for 3 and no stick cooking spray for 3; I preferred the cooking spray which is just personal preference. Now I know I was supposed to dip this in some lentils or beans or even wrap up some meat in it BUT, I did the American thing and slathered it in butter. WONDERFUL! Kid friendly too!
