Bobby's Goulash

Recipe #303128 | 1 hour | SERVES 8 (Change Servings)

RECIPE BY: Lalaflutist

This is a Paula Deen recipe from Good Housekeeping magazine. I scribbled it down in the doctor's office on the back of a receipt and it looks really good.

Posted on: May 12, 2008

Ingredients

  • lbs ground beef
  • large yellow onion
  • 3 garlic clove
  • cups water
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
  • 2 (14 1/2 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
  • tablespoons soy sauce
  • tablespoons italian seasoning
  • 3 bay leaf
  • tablespoon paula's house seasoning (or 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder & 1/2 t. black pepper)
  • tablespoon seasoning salt
  • cups uncooked macaroni
  • Directions

    1. 1
      Cook the beef, drain.
    2. 2
Add onions and garlic. Saute for about 10 minutes.
    3. 3
Stir in everything else BUT the macaroni.
    4. 4
Heat to boiling, simmer 20 minutes.
    5. 5
Stir in macaroni, heat to boiling. Simmer 20 minutes.
    6. 6
Remove from heat and let sit for 30 minutes.
    7. 7
I'd be curious to see if the macaroni got overdone with these cooking/sitting times. I think that I'd check it after that last 20 minute simmer. Also, I'm not sure about the measurements for the alternative house seasoning. That's what the magazine said, but I bet it will need more than 1/2 teaspoons of each.

We've made this several times, my husband says it's the best he's had. However, the Food Network recipe also includes 1 lb. of ground turkey, and we include that as well. Yes, that's 3 lbs. of meat. It makes a HUGE pot, the cooking times are fine, and unless you feed a crowd there will be leftovers. It reheats very well. We've also added some mushrooms from time to time.
