Found this recipe while reading a biography of the Canadian folk music great Stan Rogers. This was published in the book as his grandmother Bushnell's bread. It's great!

Ingredients

  • cups white flour
  • cups whole wheat flour
  • 3-4 tablespoons lard
  • cup sugar
  • 4-5 tablespoons salt
  • cup molasses
  • 2-3 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 (4 tablespoon) envelopes dry yeast
  • Directions

      Proof the yeast in 1 cup of warm water for 10 minutes.

      Cut the lard into the dry ingregients.
    3. 3
      Make a well and add the yeast mixture and molasses.
    4. 4
      Add the water a little at a time until you have a pliable dough.

      Knead on a lightly floured board for several minutes.

      Allow to rise until double, placing in a greased covered bowl.

      Form into loaves and place in greased bread loaf pans.

      Allow to rise until doubled.
    9. 9
      Bake 300F for 1 hour.
