A&W Coney Island Hot Dog Sauce

No self-respecting 4th of July cookout should be without it!
SERVES 100 , 12 pints
Ingredients
- 5 lbs hamburger
- 2 small onions, finely chopped
- 64 fluid ounces hunt's tomato paste
- 64 fluid ounces tomato puree
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1/3 cup cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 tablespoon pepper
- 1 tablespoon celery seed
- 3 tablespoons salt, plus
- 1 teaspoon salt
Directions

Brown hamburger and onions in very large skillet; drain.2
Add the remaining ingredients and simmer, or cook on low in a crockpot, for 3½ hours.3
Stir frequently, as it will tend to stick.4
This freezes well.5
Serve with dry minced onions rehydrated in boiling water (in addition to the sauce).

This did not taste anything A&W Coney sauce to me. It was waaaayyyy too sweet! Husband agreed. I will not make again.

I add several ground-up cooked hot dogs to the sauce & also a small jar of paprika, instead of the chili powder. Its an excellent way to use up (too browned) hot dogs.
