Kathy's Soft Sugar Cookies

Recipe #286412 | 7¼ hours | 10 min prep | SERVES 60 , 5 dozen (Change Servings)

RECIPE BY: Lainey6605

This is a recipe I got from my awesome mother-in-law. We used to always make them around Christmas and have lots of fun together. She was the one who inspired the baker and cook in me so these are very special to me. It would not be Christmas if I didn't make these at least once! The dough needs to refrigerate overnight. I frost these with "Sugar Cookie Frosting".

Ingredients

  • cups granulated sugar
  • cup shortening
  • 3 egg
  • teaspoons vanilla
  • cup sour milk (put 1 T vinegar in measuring cup and add enough milk to make 1 cup)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • teaspoon salt
  • cups flour
  • teaspoons baking powder
  • Directions

    1. 1
Mix the vinegar and milk to make sour milk.
    2. 2
Add vanilla and baking soda to sour milk; set aside.
    3. 3
In large mixing bowl, cream together sugar and shortening until light and fluffy.
    4. 4
Add eggs, one at a time.
    5. 5
In separate bowl, blend together baking salt, flour and baking powder.
    6. 6
Add flour mixture, alternately with sour milk mixture, to the wet mixture.
    7. 7
      Cover and refrigerate overnight.
    8. 8
On floured surface, roll out dough to desired thickness, about 1/4 inch.
    9. 9
Cut out with desired cookie cutter or cutters.
    10. 10
Bake at 350 degrees for about 5-7 minutes; I like mine soft.
    11. 11
Let set on cookie sheet for 1 minute before removing to wire rack to cool.
    12. 12
      Frost when cool.
    13. 13
This recipe should make about 5-6 dozen, depending on the size of the cookie cutter you use.
