Kicked up Monte Cristos!

Recipe #283022 | 30 min | add private note

These sandwiches are To-Die-For!!!! Sweetness from raspberry preserves and powdered sugar, saltiness from gouda, ham and turkey, and a little kick from cayenne! Use any good, thick-sliced bread. Challah or Brioche is great! But plain sliced bread works just fine! This is a must try for any time of day!!! (Midnight is my favorite!) Created for RSC #11.

SERVES 4 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Place 4 pieces of bread on work surface.
  2. 2
Evenly divide gouda, ham and turkey between the bread slices.
  3. 3
Top with remaining 4 slices of bread, making 4 sandwiches.
  4. 4
You can cut the sandwiches in half, or leave them whole. Secure with toothpicks, if necessary.
  5. 5
In a shallow dish combine eggs, milk and flour. Beat well.
  6. 6
Heat oil to 375º in large skillet to about 1/2 inch depth.
  7. 7
Carefully dip each sandwich into egg batter, coating both sides.
  8. 8
Fry sandwiches, a few at a time, about 1 minute each side, until golden brown.
  9. 9
    Drain on paper towels.
  10. 10
Meanwhile, gently heat raspberry preserves with cayenne in microwave, or small pan.
  11. 11
Dust with powdered sugar and serve with warmed preserves for dipping.

5 Stars! Oh my word- This was out of this world! I've always wanted to try a monte cristo but would never allow myself. This was the perfect opportunity and it was worth every single calorie. The creamy gouda with the salty ham and then the raspberry to dip- YUM. You have created a winner here!

Made for RSC11 2008. This is my second recipe for a Monte Cristo sandwich. We enjoyed this very much. I loved the rasberry preserves mixed with the ham and turkey. DELISH! DH is not a huge cheese fan and he enjoyed this sandwich as well. We both liked it the 2nd time around using a swiss cheese over the Gouda cheese flavor (personal preference). It is a quick and easy put together lunch or dinner that is not the same old same old. WIll make this again and feel good about serving it to company now that I have the flipping down pat. (ist time I messed up my sandwich ) Thank you.
