Mixed Spice - Traditional Old Fashioned English Pudding Spice

Recipe #266688 | 5 min | 5 min prep | add private note
French Tart

The aromatic scent of holidays and Mum's home baking, mixed spice is an essential jar on the spice rack. Mixed spice is a blend of sweet spices traditionally used in English cooking to provide a warming backnote. This typically English spice mixture can be purchased ready-mixed, but I prefer to make my own, as I find it difficult to find in France and I have my own special blend. It is essential for fruit cakes, Christmas plum pudding, mincemeat and hot cross buns; mixed spice is also a great addition to other fruity desserts such as apple & fruit pies, crumbles and compotes. Try it in cream cheese desserts, pickles, chutneys and mulled wine too. Make it up and buy the spices needed in small quantities, as the mixture soon loses its full rich flavour. Allspice, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger are the usual blend of spices, but I sometimes like to add a few ground cardamom seeds as well as some ground coriander seeds. This spice mixture makes an unusual and attractive gift - tie a ribbon around the neck of the jar, with pretty paper and then add a seasonal recipe tag.

Makes an unusual and attractive gift, especially at Christmas - add a recipe tag and tie a ribbon around the top of the jar with pretty seasonal paper or material.

I agree with Annacia that this is a very potent spice mix. I made half a batch without the cardamom and coriander and it was very intense when made from freshly ground spices. However, when I used it in Hot Cross Buns it was wonderful and really gave that distinctly English aroma and flavour. To be honest I was never fond of mixed spice before but I have now become a convert.

Being the 'scheduled' person that I am, I nevertheless, sometimes wait until the last minute, or at least am not always aware that I should have planned ahead for certain things! So there I was, ready to make a recipe that called for 'mixed spice' & I didn't have any! So, Zaar to the rescue, & especially French Tart! I still wasn't all prepared, but went ahead & made this recipe using already ground ingredients, including the alspice, cinnamon & clove, as well as the 2 optional ingredients! Can't say if the final product is good or bad, but I do know that it using it in the other recipe for a 'fruit loaf' made for a great-tasting treat! Thanks much for your recipes, French Tart ~ They're always so handy & trustworthy!

I really like all the flavors in this. I especially like the addition of coriander and cardamom. Planning on using this in baked goods, and maybe in rice, to go with curry dishes.

I LOVE spice and this isn't a shy violet mix. It steps right up proclaims it's self in a wonderful forth right manner. I didn't have any cardamom but I did add the coriander and it really gives a new twist to the "Traditional". I used it with a sour cream cake but I think that it would be wonderful on pretty much anything, Honestly I think that I'm going to try it with shrimp! Thanks for a winner FT.
