Ben Franklin Five and Dime Store Loose Meat Sandwich

Recipe #264601 | 20 min | 10 min prep | add private note

By: Auburndale Ray
Nov 9, 2007

Back in the 1960's there were the old Ben Franklin Five and Dime Stores and most of them had a lunch counter with swiveling stools. They also had a might fine little sloppy joe type sandwich which they sold for 23 1/2 cents. One day I asked the girl behind the counter how she made the great little sandwiches and she told me, so I wrote it on one of the napkins. I found the old napkin last week as I was looking through some old files. The little hamburgers were really a treat and the place was usually packed with customers enjoying them. So here is that special recipe, just as the girl told me back in the 1960's. I adjusted the amounts down to a smaller size, but that is the only change I made.

SERVES 6 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Crumble and break up hamburger into a deep frying pan
  2. 2
Brown hamburger meat as you contine to break into small bits.
  3. 3
Add salt and pepper as you continue to brown the meat.
  4. 4
When meat is browned, add the ketchup and the flour and mix thoroughly.
  5. 5
Continue to cook mixture for another minute.
  6. 6
Serve meat on warm buns with cole slaw on top of the meat.

Well this tasted pretty good but I really think there was missing water or stock or whatever in this recipe. I added the flour ad the ketchup and it was just not right at all, if you make this add some water, I added about a cup and let it simmer and it came out pretty good, we liked the slaw on top.
