Churrisimos

Recipe #248683 | 30 min | 10 min prep | SERVES 6 (Change Servings)

RECIPE BY: KelBel

From Simply Delicioso with Ingrid Hoffmann on foodtv.com. These are a Mexican sweet that I have had a fairs and carnivals. I was thrilled to see it on TV and how easy they were to make using puff pastry. A healthier version because they are baked, not fried like the fair food.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • sheet puff pastry, defrosted
  • dulce de leche, for dipping
  • Directions

    1. 1
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F.
    2. 2
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Mix the sugar with the cinnamon in a small bowl and set aside.
    3. 3
Sprinkle some cinnamon sugar on your work surface and place the puff pastry in an even, single layer on top.
    4. 4
Brush the pastry lightly with water and sprinkle generously with cinnamon sugar. Flip the pastry over and repeat on the second side.
    5. 5
Cut the pastry into 1/2 to 3/4-inch wide strips. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, twisting the ends of each strip so it looks like a corkscrew.
    6. 6
Bake until they're puffed and golden brown, 20 minutes and set aside to cool completely.
    7. 7
Serve with dulce de leche or caramel dipping sauce.

I made this for Sushiman's Mexican Standoff last night and they were a huge success! This was so incredibly easy, and I got such raves about it, this is going to be my newest secret weapon! I had a one kilo roll of puff pastry so I used about a half a cup of sugar and didn't even measure the cinnamon, I just added tons! I didn't even brush the pastry with water, just mixed the cinnamon and sugar together and spread it on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. I cut the pastry to fit the sheet and pressed one side into the sugar, turned it over and did the same with the other side. Cut it all up into strips and baked them in the oven on another cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. The one kilo of pastry gave me about 50 large twists. My youngest daughter stole about 10 before the party even started. I am most certainly going to be making these often!

These were quite good. I saw a repeat of this episode this past weekend and I just had to make them. I was just about to post the recipe on Zaar when I saw your post. I used premixed cinnamon sugar instead of mixing my own. I also sprinkled the tops with white sugar prior to baking. I decided to try knotting a few of them. Love the way they came out.
