The Garbage Plate (Burger Version)

Recipe #224374 | 1½ hours | 30 min prep | add private note

If you are from the Rochester area that phrase would make your mouth water. This is any drunk college kids best friend. It is a mixture of meat, carbs, and more carbs piled onto a foam container found in Nick Tahou's and "hots" food joints all over the Rochester area. For about 6 bucks (including tip) you get this plate plus a soda, not too shabby. They have a veggie version, fish, and my favorite--the white hot version. When I left the Rochester to go to school the first thing I would do when I came home was got to a "hots" and order a garbage plate. Also dont expect to finish this unless you are drunk. For more info on this delicious dish go to wikipedia.org and search garbage plate. (I put the direct link on here before but it messed up the rest of the recipe for some reason, so youre gonna have to do it the hard way lol) Also times are approx. if you make your own sauce or not. Also to speed things up I use Fast Microwaved Pan Fried Potatoes for the potatoes. This recipe is scaled to one, but it can really feed at least four people.... but whats the fun in sharing a garbage plate??

SERVES 1 , 1 garbage plate (change servings and units)

Ingredients

SPECIAL SAUCE

Directions

  1. 1
    TO MAKE SPECIAL SAUCE:.
  2. 2
In large skillet fry chopped onion and garlic in oil until soft. Add meat, stirring constantly with fork to keep its texture fine.
  3. 3
Once meat is cooked add water and tomato paste, cook for 10 minutes.
  4. 4
Then add sugar and spices. Cook 30 minutes, adding water if needed.
  5. 5
    ASSEMBLY:.
  6. 6
Mix together the noodles, mayo, celery, seasoning, and carrots and place into a large square foam container (or plate, but not as authentic).
  7. 7
Fry potatoes in butter until very crispy then put next to mac salad on plate.
  8. 8
Place OPTIONAL beans of plate if needed.
  9. 9
Cook hamburger until well done and top with sliced cheese.
  10. 10
Then place burgers ON TOP of the mac salad and home fries.
  11. 11
Mix together about equal parts mustard and horseradish and pour on top of burgers and top with optional onions.
  12. 12
Pour hot sauce or VERY LARGE spoonfuls of special sauce and a HUGE glob of ketchup over burgers (some like to stir everything together so its one huge mess).
  13. 13
Eat with plastic fork, or just use the bread as a spoon and try not to pass out. This should take about an hour to finish.
  14. 14
YUM, every drunk college kids dream food.

OMG!!! If you have never had a garbage plate you have not lived! Nick Tahou's should be on the list of places to see before you die! No, they are not pretty, but the taste and the experience are so worth it! Thank you so much for posting this! *I have made this and it was very good! Although, something seems to be missing...maybe its all the grease! Next time I make the sauce Im going to add more heat to it per my non-hot sauce users request. ETA my stars were missing!

This didn't sound like it would be good, But Buddha wanted to try it. And I'm glad he did. I made the special sauce and left out the refried beans. I also quartered the serving size and it made 1 generous serving. We think adding a fried egg or two on top of the burger would be great also.

I am calling this the Garbage Plate pleasure. I just think this is good enough to pass out for, because you pass out from the wonderful taste sensation of it all. Not only is there Saturday Lunch at the Farm, there is Sunday Night Supper at the Farm when this was served. Everyone loved this! I don't know if it was the taste or the name or both. Just all came together so beautifully I can't imagine anyone not loving this. I made this two ways. One the way it was written for carnavores and the other vegan. I made the special sauce for both, using ground beef and ground vegan crumbles and we all could of been sitting around with a spoon just eating the sauce. I added chopped onions (1 large onion) and refried beans as my family loves those. I also microwave the potato and cubed it from there and made the fried potato. I added a small slice of bread to each dish, and we were all happy as ants. I upped the celery too, because for some reason, I am on a celery kick. Thanks so much Anme for a truly fun and fantastic food memorabilia.

Our friends from Rochester introduced us to Garbage Plates a few years ago. We have often wanted a Garbage Plate late night and have no where to buy one since we've lived in Kentucky and Indiana. Today I got the idea to search online for a recipe for the "hot sauce" and came across this recipe. It is FANTASTIC! Almost exactly like the originals that we have had in Rochester. We are so excited! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!!
