Hully Gully (Frito Chili Salad)

Recipe #224143 | 1½ hours | 30 min prep | add private note
A Good Thing

By: A Good Thing
Apr 23, 2007

This stunning and delicious salad was a staple at the Wheat's household. I must give the credit for that. Man, one plate of this stuff is NEVER enough! Form a serving line and let everyone build their own; chatting in "line" is half the fun of this meal.

SERVES 8 -10 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
    Cook your chili first.
  2. 2
While the chili is simmering, chop your lettuce, tomatoes, and onion.
  3. 3
Stir a bit of garlic salt in to the sour cream (it adds flavor and makes it more creamy).
  4. 4
Grate your cheese if it's not already grated.
  5. 5
Pop the top on your salsa and serve right from the jar if you wish.
  6. 6
Place the ingredients in separate bowls in a serving line fashion in this order: plates (big is good), chips, cheese, chili, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, sour cream, and salsa.
  7. 7
To serve: Chips go on the plate first, then the cheese. When you put the chili on top of that, the cheese will melt. Then the cold stuff on top -- lettuce, tomato, onion, sour cream and salsa.
  8. 8
I don't need to say, "enjoy" 'cuz I know you will! Kids LOVE this!

Had this for lunch today -fun twist on taco salad!! I used a bagged salad mix I have on hand, Fritos, grape tomatoes, red onion, Tostitos hot salsa and Mexican 4 cheese blend to make it fast. Love the combo of flavors - nice tip to flavor the sour cream! I didn't want to thaw out my chili, so I used a can of chili, but will make this again as a family dinner when I DO thaw it out! Thanks for posting!! **Went to market tag**

This is a great salad that everyone will love. It's fun and easy, because everyone can build their own salad to their own liking. We particularly liked the fact that the chili melts the cheese nicely. Well done, A Good Thing. This is a winner and I can wait to serve it again!

My family enjoyed making and eating these. My kids liked that they could "make their own" dinner. I used my own chili recipe but followed the rest of the recipe as written. A nice, quick dinner that was enjoyed by the whole family.

Yippy - I found it!! A neighbor calls her "taco salad" that she makes with chili Hully Gully just like you do - and it is great!! It's a great meal to serve guests with kids because everyone can build their own. Thanks for posting - I couldn't find anyone else that I know calls it this fun name Yum!!
