This is a medium white sauce, to be used on creamed casseroles, scalloped foods, etc.

SERVES 1 , 2 cups (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Melt butter over low heat in sauce pan.
  2. 2
Blend in flour and seasoning over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is smooth and bubbly.
  3. 3
Allow to cook for at least 1 minute to eliminate raw flour flavor.
  4. 4
Remove from heat, SLOWLY add milk, stirring constantly to make a smooth paste; stir in remaining milk.
  5. 5
    Return to heat, stirring constantly.
  6. 6
Bring to a boil again and keep stirring until thickened.
  7. 7
If you want cheesy white sauce, add 1/2 cup shredded cheese (you can add as much cheese as you like to make it as cheesy as you wish).
  8. 8
Cover pan with tight fitting lid to prevent film formation until sauce is to be used.
  9. 9
Use on creamed and scalloped foods, sauces, gravies and in vegetable dips.

Used this as a base for a pepperjack cheese sauce for a roasted potato, caramelized onion and bacon pizza. Absolutely delicious! Thanks, I couldn't figure out how to make a "pepperjack sauce" and this was perfect. I have a horrible habit of liking my white sauce for veggies (like brussels sprouts and cauliflower) to be a smidge sweet, so I sometimes will add a 1/2 tsp of sugar to the sauce. I think my mom used to do that to get me and my younger brother to eat veggies. It worked

I can't believe I have forgotten to review this after making this recipe for over a year, now... probably at least 20 times. Replacing cream of mushroom soup with it in casseroles..... etc. Thank you so much for posting this and sorry it took me so long to review, it's great!
