Poppy Seed Beer Bread

Recipe #208324 | 1½ hours | 5 min prep | add private note

I first had this recipe about 25 years ago the first time my older sister had a family dinner at her home when she was just out of college. I got the recipe, but haven't made it in ages. I recently tried another beer bread from this site, but I like this one better. This one got great reviews even from my picky friend that doesn't like most beer breads. Based on results from a reviewer, I suggest you use a glass loaf pan or reduce the cooking time slightly if using metal.

SERVES 8 -10 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. 2
Mix all ingredients except poppy seeds and sesame seeds.
  3. 3
Carefully mix in 1 tbsp poppy seeds. Do not overmix.
  4. 4
Spray loaf pan with cooking spray.
  5. 5
Sprinkle sesame seeds evenly across the bottom of the loaf pan.
  6. 6
    Pour dough into loaf pan.
  7. 7
Lightly sprinkle the top with poppy seeds & sesame seeds.
  8. 8
Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  9. 9
NOTE: Original recipe did not include the sesame seeds on the bottom of the loaf, but I like them. The original recipe also stated that sesame seeds could be used instead of poppy seeds mixed into the loaf & on top (eliminating the poppy seeds completely from the recipe).

Oh this was just yummy! I used Highland's Gaelic Ale and I loved the choice I made! The beer added a great hoppy taste to the bread. We scarfed this down with soup! Perfect!

Easy, easy, easy! This came together so quick and such great flavor. The bread itself is wonderful with a sweet flavor from the sugar that blends so perfectly with the nutty flavor from the sesame seeds. DH was very happy with this one. Did I mention how easy it was to make? I used Coors lite for the beer and would love to try this with an ale, like Bass or Killians.
