This is a nice side dish to any German entree, especially pork. It can be made in the crockpot, or on the stovetop.

I followed this recipe to the letter and the beans were wonderful with full flavor. Next time I will try with steamed fresh green beans. Thanks lazyme

Thank you so much, lazyme, for adding this in here. Both my Irish and German grandmothers taught me that THIS is the only way to serve green beans. "Always use fresh green beans, they both told me." My German Oma said to cook them S L O W, all day. My Irish gramma said to always cook them in a cast iron skillet. They are supposed to be cooked with diced onion, too. But your way is also delish. Thanks again. Angelcook

These were so easy to make and tasted so good. I used 28 ounces of frozen green beans, added no water and used 2 tablespoons of bacon drippings. Turned on high for 3 hours and they were done. Thanks for posting Made for 1-2-3 Hit Wonders 2007

Rather than using canned beans, I trimmed and steamed 1 1/2 lbs fresh beans before adding to the pot. I also used the bacon but not the bacon drippings; this turned out to be plenty for getting a nice bacony taste to this sweet and sour dish. For me, this was good enough to eat as a meal in itself, but I did have a rice pilaf on the side.
