Sloppy Joes

Recipe #15344 | 1½ hours | 20 min prep | add private note

By: Susan1
Dec 5, 2001

This is found in my recipe collection under "Mrs. McCann's Barbeque". It was handed down from a neighbor of my great-aunt's sometime in the 1940's. I prefer to use ground round so there isn't so much fat. Gets better the longer it simmers.

SERVES 6 -8 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Cook meat slowly in skillet with salt and onion.
  2. 2
Meanwhile, make sauce by mixing together all other ingredients and cooking slowly over low heat for 15 minutes.
  3. 3
Drain (not much to drain if you use ground round) and add meat.
  4. 4
Let simmer for at least an hour, stirring from time to time, to let meat absorb the sauce.
  5. 5
    Serve on toasted hamburger buns.

I had never made sloppy joes before. They were so simple to make and my family loved them. I will be making this recipe again.

This is a great recipe. I scaled it up because I had 2 lbs. of ground beef and it made 8-10 servings. The flavor was great. Yes, it could have been saucier, but the flavor made up for it! Next time I will just make more sauce! I didn't cook the sauce by itself for the 15 minutes because I was short of time, but I did let it all simmer together for a full hour. Yum! Thanks for sharing!

This was great. Made it a couple times, already. Most ingredients are usually on hand anyway. Beats the heck out of canned or boxed mixes.
