Apple Turkey Fingers (For Older Infants & Toddlers)

Recipe #145212 | 1 hour | 30 min prep | add private note

Nov 16, 2005

Inspired by the classic (and kid-friendly) combo of apples & turkey, I concocted these tonight for my 9 month old and liked them so much I might end up eating them myself! Perfect for older babies and toddlers (serve with a fun dipping sauce), these make cute little "fingers" in perfect take-one-out-of-the-freezer-at-a-time portions. I used half an egg (if your child is over 12 mos. you can use more - I limited the egg white for infants) and unprocessed bran (for a nutritional boost) for binding. Enjoy, babies and grown-ups alike!

30 fingers (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
    Preheat broiler.
  2. 2
Place ground turkey in a large mixing bowl.
  3. 3
In a food processor or by hand, grate the carrot, apple, garlic & onion, or else mince very finely (I grated the carrots using a microplane, but minced the apple, onion and garlic for texture). Add to bowl with turkey.
  4. 4
Add the 1/2 beaten egg (or whole egg for older kids), bran, thyme and any seasonings you wish. Mix all ingredients together.
  5. 5
Scoop mixture up about 1/4 cup at a time (size of a large meatball) and roll into little sausage shapes, placing on a broiling pan or cookie sheet as you go (you may need to do two pans worth). Wet your hands periodically if it's sticky.
  6. 6
Place in broiler and broil for 10-15 minutes on one side, then turn over and broil 5-10 minutes more.
  7. 7
Remove and let cool. Store together in a freezer bag or individually wrapped in foil.
  8. 8
    Enjoy!

These are very good, but my son wouldn't try them. I couldn't find the bran so I had to use breadcrumbs, but I did throw in a bit of flax, and wheat germ as well as a handful of oats. I also added a bit of poultry seasoning to it. They cooked way faster than expected from the instructions so I had burnt outsides, but luckily I was watching them and at least caught it before it got too bad. We dipped these in an asian sauce and they were just delicious. If these took a little less time to prep I would for sure make these very often, and I will for sure make them again. Even my husband liked them and he hates cooked carrots and apples lol.

This is a good recipe. I changed it a little by taking out the onion and adding cauliflower, I also added ground flax seed meal to my breading. My daughter is really picky and while I'm lucky if she eats one I will always finish them quilt free.

I had no intention of making these for myself--they were supposed to be for my 10-month-old. But they smelled so amazing I had to try one, and I'm definitely going to be making these for the whole family soon! One thing I did differently--I really hate handling raw meat mixtures, so instead I spooned small mounds onto the cookie sheet and flattend them into patties with the back of a spoon. Worked great, and no mess! These would make fabulous hamburgers, but I think I'll also try this as a meatloaf. Definitely very impressed with the taste and texture of these--normally, I don't like ground meat much, but these are really good. UPDATE: I tried making this as a meatloaf (put it in a loaf pan and bake at 350 for an hour or until fully cooked), and it turned out GREAT. It's a lot less messy than making individual patties or fingers. After baking it, I sliced the meatloaf into pieces and froze them, so I can easily take out and defrost a single serving as needed.

Not only did my 9month old like these, but so did I! I followed the recipe exactly, except for spraying my baking sheet with some non-stick spray. Wonderful. Thanks!
