Mama's Best Macaroni and Cheese

Recipe #135662 | 20 min | 20 min prep | add private note

My kids say this is better than 'the blues' and gobble it up, even when I toss in a handul of cooked veggies like broccoli, peas, carrots, etc.... It is just as easy as the 'blue box' at least I think so and it is much healthier! World Tour: would fit British, Canadian and SW catagories.

SERVES 6 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Make a ‘roux’ by melting butter in pan and adding flour. Stir constantly and cook until it is the color of caramel candy. It burns easily so stir stir stir!
  2. 2
Slowly and carefully add milk while stirring.
  3. 3
When milk starts to steam add cheese and seasonings and stir until melted and well combined.
  4. 4
Pour over cooked macaroni noodles and serve.

The picture got me at first glance. I just knew this one would be just right for my tastes and it was! I had some with a couple of dogs and rolls and it was great together. I look forward to the leftovers! Milt

My family thought this was OK. I kept my stove on Medium heat and it seemed to take a bit for the roux to brown but when it did it did so quickly! All in all, this was very easy and turned out creamy. My husband said it was better than the powdered kind although I felt it was a bit blah, I am thinking maybe a colby jack cheese or something with a bit of zip would be really good

Yummo!! Simple and easy to make, and so delicious! My 6 year old ate the whole plate, so that tells me this is a 5 star right away. I used whole wheat rotini noodles and scaled the recipe down in half. Turned out perfectly and creamy. Sometimes home made mac and cheese recipes can be a little grainy, but not this one. Thanks for a terrific recipe Hope!

My kids love the "blue box"; I can't stand it, so I'm very happy to find this easy kid-pleasing recipe! I used tri color rotini, since it was leftover. It was delish, with enough cheese sauce to please our wisconsin cheese loving taste buds! Thanks!
