Smothered Hamburger Steak

Recipe #128245 | 25 min | 10 min prep | add private note

An easy hamburger steak recipe, smothered in brown gravy.

SERVES 2 -3 , 2 -4 hamburger steak patties (change servings and units)

Ingredients

  • 1 onion (doesn't have to be 1 whole onion, adjust to your liking. Or you can also substitute 1 package of oni)
  • 1 lb ground beef (can use lean ground round)
  • 1 cup water (1/2 to 1 cup)
  • 1 (8 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 (1 ounce) package brown gravy mix (packet size varies)

Directions

  1. 1
Dice onion and add to the ground beef. (If using onion soup mix, blend well in ground beef.).
  2. 2
Mix and form into patties. Fry the patties in skillet on medium heat until cooked to your liking. I usually fry until they are medium-well, to well done.
  3. 3
While patties are cooking, add 1 can cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 to 1 cup water, and brown gravy packet/mix in a bowl, stirring well. After patties are browned and ready, add this mixture to the skillet. Reducing the heat to simmer, I spread the mixture over the patties and turn them once or twice as the mixture warms. Stir mixture occasionally. Let simmer for 5-10 minutes or until gravy is good and hot.
  4. 4
Serve with mashed potatoes, your choice of veggies, a good salad, hot rolls or bread, and a cold glass of iced tea.
  5. 5
Of course, this recipe can be doubled. Serving size depends on how hungry your family or company is! ;).
  6. 6
    Kind of a "blue-plate" special!

I had a pound of ground beef to use up and this recipe sounded good. It was very easy to make. I followed the recipe exactly as written. I used the onion soup mix instead of onions and I used a cup of water. Everyone enjoyed them.

Made this for hubby last night for dinner and he loved it. We both agreed that we needed to make a little more gravy next time. It's been added to my keeper pile since hubby is already asking when we're having it again! Thanks for a great recipe!

Most excellent way to use up hamburger meat. My dear husband came home and when he saw what I had on the table ready for him he just filled his plate to the max. He ate til he was stuffed. He loved this recipe and said I needed to make this more often and than stumbled to the sofa for a nap. I made cream potatoes and green beans and garlic toast to serve with this dish. I used Knorr classic brown gravy pack and I put the onion in the gravy instead of the meat. It was delicious! I have been told to make again so its a keeper! Thanks for sharing your recipe mysonshine!

I used the raw onion in my ground beef. I have made these before using the onion soup mix. I think I prefer the raw onion. The gravy was a new twist. My husband said next time double the gravy. These are very easy to make. Thanks mysonshine. Bullwinkle.
