This recipe came from a good friend who learned it from her grandmother. The sugar in the green beans give it a good flavor.

Loved these green beans!!! I didn't drain any of the liquid from the can because I knew I was going to be simmering them for a while longer than the 15 minutes while I prepared the rest of the meal. I didn't have any bacon grease... so I just browned up 2 slice of bacon along with just a touch of olive oil... and only added in about 1 tsp of sugar because I knew it was going to be too sweet for our tastes from reading other reviews. I left out the salt since my green beans were not the "no salt" variety. I think I let them simmer for almost 35 minutes and they were just delicious! Thanks for another great way to prepare one of our favorite veggies!!!

I love the idea of this recipe, canned green beans always taste so...canned. This was terrific but WAY too sweet for me. I will definitely use the bacon grease, this gave the beans SO much flavor, but I'll omit the sugar next time. My BF and I don't have much of a sweet tooth, it's my own fault for not reducing the amount of sugar in the first place but I wanted to stay true to the recipe on the first try. Thank you for posting!

This has become my new way to fix green beans! After reading the other reviews, I cut the sugar to 1 1/2 teaspoons and the sweetness was just right for me. I used French style green beans and served with Easy Bruschetta Chicken and 350 Roasted Parmesan Potatoes. Thanks for posting!

I am giving this 5* for the tip on the sugar. I never have added that before and it made all the difference in the world! Used fresh green beans, ham bouillon, onions and the sugar, salt and pepper. What a nice flavor. Thanks, Carole in Orlando.
