Cracker Barrel Fried Apples

Recipe #106262 | 35 min | 20 min prep | add private note

Dec 16, 2004

I grew up eating fried apples and then as an adult I discovered Cracker Barrel and their fried apples. This recipe is from another site and is as close as I have seen to Cracker Barrel. The recipe says you can freeze the cooked apples. I have never done this as there is never any left.

SERVES 6 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
In a medium skillet, combine the 2 cups apple juice and sliced apples.
  2. 2
Simmer gently until apples are fork tender but not mushy, turning apples frequently.
  3. 3
Remove apples from juice using a slotted spoon and place in an oven safe dish.
  4. 4
In a blender, combine the remaining 1/2 cup apple juice, cornstarch, apple pie spice and sugar.
  5. 5
Blend a few seconds until smooth.
  6. 6
Whisk mixture into hot apple juice in skillet and cook, stirring constantly on medium high heat until it bubbles and becomes thickened and smooth.
  7. 7
Pour thickened mixture over apples and serve.
  8. 8
Please note the cooking time is an approximate.

These were delicious, and so much like Cracker Barrel, but better if you ask me. I used golden delicious apples, and they were a big hit. I can't wait to make them again. I hope you try these, you won't be sorry. My thanks to the other Paula, she has lots of great recipes.

WOW these were so very tasty. Didn't have any Apple Pie Spice so just sprinkled on some cinnamon and allspice. Next time will peel apples, we really didn't care for the texture with the peel on. Served with Pork Roast With Herbed Pepper rub (281114) and Cheesy Garlic Scalloped Potatoes (234645). Make for a wonderful dinner. Thank you Paula G fro sharing

Wow, these taste so much like Cracker Barrel's! I even used pumpkin pie spice (which I didn't realize until I was on the final step..oops!), and they still tasted like the restaurant's fried apples! These were a nice treat to have with our dinner...thanks! Edited to add this tip: I didn't feel like digging my blender out, so I simply whisked those ingredients together, and that worked just fine.

I cooked the apples for 20 minutes. For the spice mix I used 1 teaspoon cinnamon,1/2 nutmeg grated, and 1/2 teaspoon cardamom. I use my vanilla sugar. Flavored Sugars Flavored Sugar or Splenda. These apples would be great on anything from ice cream to a pork roast.
