Chow Gai Laan (Jade Green Broccoli)

Recipe #103243 | 15 min | 5 min prep | add private note

Adapted from a Chinese cookbook by Jim Lee that was published around 1970. This is one of my all-time favorite cookbooks; I was introduced to it by friends who were Chinese students I knew at University of Virginia. The gai laan which the Chinese eat is not actually broccoli, but broccoli is a good substitute which works well in America, where most of us don't have access to gai laan.

I used Gai Laan instead of broccoli since it is readily available in my area. We found it to be somewhat bitter though, so it didn't turn out as well as I would have liked. If we try it again, maybe I'll try adding more sugar or use broccoli instead & maybe a little more sauce.

This was a nice variation on broccoli. Easy and a vibrant green color. I added some toasted sesame seeds at the end.

Gorgeous and delicious. I used half the broccoli and all the sauce. Thanks, eebrag.
